Movie Project
Project Description:For this project we worked as a whole class to create a film about DNA. We took what we had learned in class and some new knowledge inorder to make the film. Our Class decided to make our film about anti resistant bacteria. We were split into different roles and everyone contributed to the project somehow. There was film makers, editors, artists, scriptwriters, and directors. I was one of the directors. We ended up getting close on time, so we decided to make mural of the process it took to create the film(Which is seen below).
Reflection:
The purpose of this project was to think about what makes individuals unique and what each individual adds to the project. It was also to see how individuals can get together and collaborate. It was a way of showing us how important communication and collaboration is. This was shown in our class making a movie about bacteria. I think as an individual I met this purpose by being who I am. By being who I am I brought my unique personality to the project. I was able to bring the part of me out that is organized and strong working. Our whole class met the purpose by overcoming problems and working together to make our final product. We collaborated and communicated in order to make our film. We also were able to analyze information that we learned and turn it into our film.
I think throughout this project I succeed at keeping things organized. Everyday when I came to class I made sure that we had a plan of what we wanted our class to accomplish and get done. Usually we were able to complete what we had planned for that day. I also felt like I succeed in organizing tasks and people. There were moments in the project when there were some people that didn’t have a job or wasn’t sure what they could do. I was able to find something that they could contribute to and in the end it really helped us finish our final product. For our whole class I think we succeeded at communicating and problem solving. Whenever we ran into a bump in the road we were able to come together as a class, talk about it, and figure it out. For instance, one of our actors ran into an issue and wasn’t able to act, we were able to talk as a group and find another actor. Throughout the project we also made sure that everyone had the same mind set and everyone was being heard. We had meetings about the script and what was happening with the film.
A personal challenge I had during this project was being the leader. There were moments during the project when I felt like I was bossing people around. I think part of it was I was stressed and I was trying to get others realize that we didn’t have a lot of time to finish the movie. I also felt like there were moments when I wasn’t sure on how to get people motivated to help out with the project and help with what we needed to get done. As a whole class I think a challenge was getting the film done and time management. I think our whole class was stressed out and wasn’t sure if we were going to be able to finish the film in time. We ended up deciding that we should just try and focus on getting the scenes shot, but not focus on the quality of the each scene. We ended up finishing filming and editing in time, but there were some scenes that were cut out. In the future I think we could conquer our challenges by making it so everyone could participate in each role. I also think we could have planned out our film a little better. We should have finished script writing a lot faster and filmed sooner. Overall, I think if next time we just time manage our work a little better and included everybody in each role we could overcome our challenges. In this project collaboration had a huge and important role. We collaborated on the script and what our movie was going to look like. The whole class looked over the script and gave critiques. Besides that there was even more collaboration. The actors had to collaborate with the filmers, directors, editors, and artists to figure out what each scene was going to look like. I collaborated with pretty much everyone in the class for this project since I was the director. I collaborated with the actors, the other director, the filmers, the editors, the art directors, set design, and script writers. I collaborated with all of them so we were all on the same page and I was able to tell other groups about what was going on.
If we were to do this project again I would change my approach to collaboration by making sure there was more collaboration in every group, so we could communicate well and make our final product beautiful. If we were to do this project I again I would change how much knowledge we included in our film and how much knowledge we learned during making the film. While we were making the film I feel like not everybody learned the information we were making our film about. I was to focused on making the film and finishing it I didn’t really focus on the information we were putting in it. If we did it again I would keep the idea of it being more student led and being the student's choice. It made the students have a lot of responsibility and I feel overall taught us many lessons about collaboration and communication.

Ecology Take action Project
Project Description: For this project each group created a question about an ecosystem and researched data that was relevant to their question. We had to find characteristics of an ecosystem and how species are effected in that environment. Once we had our data and information about our ecosystem we then had to find a solution that could help with that issue. My group chose to look at how elevation effects the American Pika in the Alpine Tundra. We took data someone had already collected and analyzed it to create a conclusion and solution.
Project Reflection:
Prior to this project I had worked on trails and had knowledge about how humans are affecting trails, so when we participated in trail maintenance with Trails 2000 I had a sense of what we were doing and why. Also, before this project I learned how to write a scientific proposal, so I felt pretty comfortable with writing one for this project. In Biology class this year I did learn not to ever use pronouns in your proposal, to create a professional tone.
For our project we researched the American Pika. Before this project I knew they existed and I have seen them while hiking, but didn’t really know anything about them. This project brought to my attention that climate change has effect on everything even the littlest organisms. It also widened my horizon on other ecosystems around us. During this project I did have troubles working with my group. I felt not everyone lifted their own weight, which made it hard because I was gone for part of the project. Another thing that was difficult for me was creating the infographic. I was gone when we went over what it needs to look like, so I had to get help from my peers. Even though I struggled with this the infographic was one of the most significant things I accomplished during this project as well as talking to the public at the exhibition. The infographic contributed to my project by displaying information from my proposal through pictures and it made it easier for the viewer to understand the issue. Talking to people at the exhibition contributed to my success by spreading awareness about what's happening with the American Pika. This project not only allowed me to learn about Pikas, but it also allowed me to expand my knowledge on how species rely on each other and how they work together. I knew this concept before we started, but this project confirmed what I already knew and made me go into more depth with the relationships in each ecosystem. This project also confirmed that I am the type of person that likes to have things organized. Each day I would have a plan of what I wanted to get done and what I was imagining my group would have accomplished. If I did do this project again I definitely would have liked to manage my time a little better with the scientific proposal, so I could have had more time to add and edit it. Besides that I honestly felt this project ran really smooth and was really organized.
Reflecting back on this project has allowed me to see that I will be able to take what I learned about infographics, working with a group, and apply it to future work. Having knowledge about infographics will help me spread knowledge through a poster in my other classes in the next couple of years. Working in a group is a really valuable thing in life. There will always be moments when you have to work in a group, so this project just added to my experience of working in a group. Before this project I do wish I had more hands on experiences with each ecosystem and seeing all the different species. I feel it would have expanded my knowledge on how species work together and how humans are affecting each organism. This experience worked really well with my learning style. We got to be hands on, have some lecture days, and also talk to people who have experience being an ecologist. I am the type of learner that likes to be hands on, but also have some days where all we do is take notes. It allows be to take what we learned and apply it to something we do. When we took notes and then went and worked on the trails, it was very beneficial for my learning style. Participating in this experience has changed how I look at our environment. Now whenever I’m out in nature I look at how organisms work together. I also make sure I don’t get anything on my pants and socks, so I don’t spread seeds causing disturbance in that ecosystem. It also changed how I approach researching. Prior to this experience I wasn’t really good at researching, this experience allowed me to work on that skill and it changed how I analyze data.
