Reflection:
Before this project, I had very little knowledge regarding gun legislation and firearm uses. I don't pay attention to the news or politics, so I rarely hear about mass shootings and gun violence. Due to the fact that I don't pay attention politics and news I didn't understand or know the gun legislations. Also, I wasn't raised around guns, so I didn't really know how they are used. Coming into this project I didn't have view on firearms, their uses, and legislation because I didn't know all the facts. When we had class conversations I was able to listen to different view points and hear from people that are invested in this topic. In our class, we had people who were for gun control, and others who use guns in their daily life for work and to fit in with a community, so I was able to see different perspectives. During these conversations we were able to stay open minded to everyones thoughts and opinions. I think some students were really intrigued to hear from a different perspective then their own. However, there were a few students that felt like people looked at them differently because of their opinion on firearms. I think we eventually overcame this by not judging the person for their views and knowing that these views don't completely define them. The research also allowed me gain more knowledge on gun legislation and their use. I gained more knowledge on mass shootings, access to firearms, the 2nd amendment, and what other countries have done to stop mass shootings. Through this project I don't think my viewpoint has changed, but it has allowed to gain more knowledge.
For this project, I helped create the trigger room. We started by discussing ways we could make this an emotion room, without trying to attack people. Once we figured out what we wanted to do, we started to research footage and information on different mass shootings and school shootings. I ended up helping find footage of the Columbine, Florida, and Las Vegas shooting, as well as, looked up different texts that had been sent from students during the shootings. When we started building I helped organize the trigger room and made sure everyone was getting done what we needed to get done. I helped build the walls, specifically the newspaper wall. I also helped hang the text messages we had found while researching. I think through this project I helped people stay positive and organized. Also, during this project I felt I was there for people when they needed help or wanted to talk.
