For this painting I decided to express the song through the colors and the objects I incorporated. I decided to use blues and greens to reflect the songs calmness and I incorporated the trees to show what this song means to me.
In order to get to my final piece I used different layers. I started out by doing my wash with a light blue. Once that had somewhat dried, I did a wash with blues a greens over it. I really liked my wash, so I moved on to adding the lyrics on to my painting. I used chalk pastel to write my lyrics on my painting. I would write the lyrics down and then spray them with water. One thing that was really challenging with this was when I sprayed it with the water the color of the wash was kinda wiped away, which I didn’t really like. I didn’t really know how I could keep the color there and get rid of all the water that was on my canvas without it dripping or taking out the color.
At the very beginning of this project I was thinking of doing a drip down my canvas and making the wash be more of an ocean or lake. I decided that my wash looked more like a forest to me, but could be up to interpretation from the viewer (It could be hills, the ocean, or the sky). Before I added my trees and words I had the thought of making my trees very light and having the words being dripping behind them. I later decided that I liked the idea of my trees being darker because they would pop out more and I decided not to include dripping words because they would have taken over my wash and would send the emotion of sadness.
The song I chose is very calm and mellow. In my painting I am trying to evoke these emotions through the color. I felt like the blues and greens I used in my wash created this sense of calmness and mellowness. Usually blues and greens evoke the emotions of peace, patience, restfulness, and coolness, which is why I included these colors. I think the wash itself created these emotions through the washes shape and the way it goes from blue to more of a green.
